SAN ANTONIO, TX – (March 19, 2024) — Ancora Education, a leading workforce training and solutions provider, has announced its South Texas Vocational Technical Institute (STVT) campus in San Antonio, Texas will host a competition for high school welding programs called #WELDWARS on Saturday, April 12.
Four area high schools will compete in a series of welding competitions designed to raise awareness of the value of skilled trades, particularly welding. The U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS) expects there to be 45,800 openings for welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers projected each year, on average, over the next decade.
“There is a need in the U.S. for skilled tradespeople,” says Vanessa Daniels, Executive Director of STVT San Antonio. “Our Combination Welding program at STVT emphasizes hands-on learning and workplace safety. We’re excited to host these high school students on our campus to get a feel for what their future could look like should they choose to take the vocational route.”
The schools competing are Lytle High School, South San High School, Southside High School, and Floresville High School. Each school will receive a $500 donation for participating, and the winning school will receive a $5,000 donation to their school’s welding program. Individual winners will receive professional welding gear worth hundreds.
The event will take place on the STVT campus, located at 6714 S. Flores Street, from 9:00 AM-4:30 AM, with the welding competition beginning at 9:30 AM. The day’s festivities will also include a construction safety relay, a live DJ, a dunking booth, mechanical bull rides, yard games, food vendors, and more. Representatives of Ancora and STVT will be on-site to give tours and answer questions. The general public is invited to attend to cheer on the teams and enjoy the events. A full agenda is attached.
